KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- A portion of the University of Michigan men's track and field team competed at the Sea Ray Relays Wednesday-Saturday (April 11-14) on Tom Black Track. The Wolverines also sent several members of the team to compete in the Spartan Invite Saturday (April 14) in East Lansing, Mich.
Junior/sophomore Dan Harmsen (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) improved on his NCAA regional qualifying mark in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking 52.04 to win his heat and place fifth in the event. The mark is just 0.1 seconds shy of his personal best (51.94). Overall, Harmsen had the second-fastest time of all the college athletes behind Kevin Hutton of North Carolina State (51.18).
Senior Michael Whitehead (East Norristown, P.A./Norristown Area) also improved on his NCAA qualifying mark in the triple jump. Whitehead landed a mark of 51-7 to claim fourth place in the event. Whitehead was just 10 1/2 inches shy of Wisconsins Alonzo Moore for the top mark (52-5 1/2).
