Wolverines Kick Off Competition at Big Ten Outdoor Meet

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team kicked off competition at the Big Ten Conference Outdoor Championships on Friday (May 11), competing in a pair of events on the first day of action on Nittany Lion Track in State College, Pa.
Sophomore/freshman Brendan Lodge (Narragansett, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) scored in the hammer throw for the Wolverines. Lodge landed an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 185-4 to place eighth overall in the event. The mark is a new personal record for Lodge and is the second longest throw in U-M school history. Lodge was only ten feet shy of Patrik Johansson's school record mark of 195-4, which he set in 1999.
Also scoring for the Wolverines was sophomore/freshman John Black (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice). Black took sixth place in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 30:54.81 competing in his first ever Big Ten Championships. Junior Seth Thibodeau (Milford, Mich./Milford) was 0.54 seconds shy of a scoring performance when he clocked 31:04.82 to place ninth. Sophomore/freshman Tony Nalli (Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter) was a few seconds behind, finishing 11th (31:07.33).
After five events in the decathlon, freshman Frank Shotwell (Medina, Ohio/Medina) sits eighth in the event standings with 3,468 points. Shotwell's first-day highlights include a third-place finish in the long jump (21-11) and a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a season-high time of 49.67. Fifth-year senior Adam Kiesler (Rochester, Ill./Rochester) is 15th after the first five events (2,990 points).
Tthe Wolverines will return to action Saturday (May 12) for the second day of competition at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in State College, Pa. Events will begin with the decathlon 110-meter hurdles at 9:30 a.m. at Nittany Lion Track.
