Brunemann Leads U-M Effort at Namesnik Grand Prix

ANN ARBOR, Mich. C The University of Michigan women's swimming team joined the U-M club team, Club Wolverine, at the Eric Namesnik Memorial Grand Prix Thursday through Sunday (May 17-20) at Canham Natatorium. The meet was the third stop of 2007 Toyota Grand Prix Series, pitting the athletes in races against the top swimmers in the country as they prepare for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
Michigans strongest finish came in the 800-meter freestyle. Sophomore Emily Brunemann (Crescent Springs, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) clocked in at 8:50.26 to take the top spot, making her the only undergraduate swimmer, mens or womens, to win an 'A' final. Freshman Emily Hanson (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) followed close behind her U-M teammate, coming in third place (8:56.22). Freshman Mary Catherine Steiner (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams) finished 35th in the final (9:30.27).
Brunemann also qualified for two 'A' finals earlier in the Grand Prix. She turned in a second place performance in the 400-meter freestyle (4:20.44) on Friday before finishing eighth in Saturdays 400-meter individual medley (5:00.46).
Freshman Margaret Kelly (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) turned in a solid performance with three A Final and three B Final appearances. She grabbed two top five finishes in the first day of competition, touching the wall second in the 200-meter individual medley (2:17.86) and fourth in the 50-meter freestyle (0:26.47). Highlighting her B finals was a second place finish in the 200-meter backstroke (2:19.93). Kelly claimed victory in the 400-meter freestyle relay (3:53.82) with former Wolverine teammate Lindsey Smith (2003-07) and Club Wolverine swimmers Allison Schmitt and Kaitlin Sandeno.
A pair of Wolverine sophomores also qualified for multiple B finals. Hannah Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) captured spots in four races and Payton Johnson (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) chimed in for three races. The two swam together to a fourth place finish in the 400-meter freestyle relay (3:59.26) with U-M teammate Melissa Jaeger (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and Club Wolverine swimmer Liz Koselka.
Smith finished a trio of individual events in the top five of each B final she swam. Her top finish came in the 50-meter freestyle where she finished third (0:26.83) followed by a fourth place effort in the 200-meter backstroke (2:20.92) and fifth place in the 100-meter backstroke (1:06.61). In addition to the relay, Johnson swam to a fourth place result in the 100-meter butterfly B final (1:04.96) and sixth in the 200-meter individual medley B final (2:26.22).
