ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Emily Shea (Ashfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) and junior/sophomore Karen Colwell (Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington) were named to the All-Central Region team, the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association announced on Tuesday, May 22. Shea earned first team honors and Colwell was picked for the second team.
Additonally, Colwell and sophomores Michela Musto (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) and Kate Strzalkowski (St. Catharines, Ontario/St. Catharines Collegiate) were named CRCA Scholar Athletes.
Shea and Colwell were each members of the U-M first varsity eight that won the Big Ten boat crown at the Big Ten Championships on April 28. Shea spent the final three seasons of her career entrenched in Michigan's top boat. Colwell moved up into the first eight after losing the 2006 season due to injury. The All-Central Region recognition is a first for Shea and Colwell.
Colwell and Strzalkowski were each members of the Wolverine first varsity eight throughout the 2007 season. Musto was a mainstay in the second varsity eight. CRCA Scholar Athletes were required to have competed in NCAA eligible boats (first varsity eight, second varsity eight, first varsity four) for at least 75 percent of the season, while also earning a grade-point average at or above 3.5. The student-athlete also had to be in at least her second academic year.
