ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Associate head coach Mike McGuire of the University of Michigan womens track and field team was named as the top assistant coach in Division I track and field (women's distance), as selected by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) Wednesday (June 13).

Earlier in the season, McGuire was honored with the distinction of being named NCAA Mideast Regional Assistant Coach of the Year (women's distance) on June 6, also selected by USTFCCA.
Under McGuires guidance, the Wolverines had a season for the ages in the middle- and long-distances. McGuire helped produce five outdoor All-Americans along with eight more in the indoor season to tally 13 All-Americans in the middle- and long-distance events. McGuire was also on hand as graduate/senior Anna Willard (Greenwood, Maine/Telstar Regional HS) claimed the first-ever 3,000m steeplechase national title for the Maize and Blue. Fifth-year senior co-captain Katie Erdman (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac HS) (800m), junior Nicole Edwards (Winnipeg, Manitoa/Vincent Massey HS) (1,500m) and Willard (3,000-meter steeplechase) all won NCAA Mideast Region titles for Michigan. McGuire also led U-M to set collegiate records in the 4 x 800m and 4 x 1,500m relay events at the Penn Relays in April. Willard was also named as the Michigan Female Athlete of the Year, giving McGuire his fourth student-athlete to earn the honor.
McGuire and the Wolverines closed the 2007 season with a third-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships this past weekend (June 6-9). U-M participants garnered seven All-America crowns and two national titles.
