ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan sophomore pitcher/designated hitter Zach Putnam (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) was named to Baseball America's All-America second team at the utility position that accounts for his contributions to the Wolverines at both his positions.
Putnam
Baseball America's All-America team was announced at the start of the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. Michigan finished the season at 42-19 and upset top-ranked Vanderbilt in the NCAA Nashville Regional (June 1-4) before losing two games to defending NCAA champion Oregon State in the Corvallis Super Regional (June 10-11) as the host Beavers advanced to the CWS to defend their title.
Putnam, who recently was named Michigan's 2007 Ray Fisher Award winner as the team's Most Valuable Player and the Geoff Zahn Award winner as U-M's Most Valuable Pitcher, earlier became the first player in Big Ten history to earn first team all-conference honors at two positions (starting pitcher and designated hitter) in the same year.
Putnam, who took a no-hitter into the ninth inning before losing the Super Regional opener 1-0 on a two-out single to Oregon State in his last start of the season, was 8-5 on the mound with a 3.87 earned run average while recording 87 strikeouts in 102.1 innings of work. At the plate, Putnam, who batted fourth in the Michigan lineup for all 61 games, hit .330 (74-for-224) with eight home runs, 59 runs batted in and a team-leading nine game-winning RBI.
The last time a Wolverine earned Baseball America postseason All-America honors was catcher Jake Fox (2001-03), currently in the Chicago Cubs organization, a third team All-America catcher in 2003. Current junior/sophomore RHP Chris Fetter (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) was a Baseball America Freshman All-America selection last season as a redshirt freshman.
