ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind a walk-off double from Joonsung Park, the University of Michigan baseball team defeated Washington 8-7 on Friday afternoon (April 24) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan (26-16, 11-8 Big Ten) trailed 7-4 entering the bottom of the ninth. Brayden Jefferis tallied his fourth hit of the day, a one-out single up the middle, before Matt Ossenfort drew a walk to bring the tying run to the plate. Evan Haeger ripped a double through the right side, scoring Jefferis, and brought up Josh Campbell, who walked to load the bases. Park came off the bench and crushed a ball that one-hopped the wall in left-center and cleared the bases for the walk-off winner.Â
Washington (18-22, 8-10 Big Ten) opened the scoring in the second inning with a solo home run before a two-run blast in the third to take a 3-0 lead.
U-M struggled offensively over the first four innings, with just two hits and two runners in scoring position. The Wolverines got on the board in the fifth with a two-out single from Colby Turner, who, after an error, scored on a Noah Miller to cut the Washington lead to 3-1.
The Wolverines took the lead in the bottom of the seventh, with Cooper Mullens, Turner and Miller opened the inning with walks. Jefferis tallied his third hit of the day, scoring Mullens and Turner while pinch-runner Carson Luna scored on a Josh Campbell sacrifice fly to put the Wolverines in front 4-3.
The Huskies retook the lead in the eighth, scoring four runs on four hits and sending nine batters to the plate to go ahead 7-4, but Tyler Finkbeiner and Slade Moore (2-0) worked out of jams to set up the U-M rally in the ninth.
U-M used seven pitchers, with starter Kurt Barr allowed three runs on five hits with eight strikeouts in six innings but did not factor in the decision. He has now moved up to 10th all-time in career strikeouts at Michigan with 224. Michael Quedens threw a scoreless seventh before Moore's scoreless ninth with two strikeouts.
At the plate, the Wolverines were paced by a four-hit day from Jefferis, who added a run and two RBIs while U-M's other five hits came from five different players. Park tallied a team-leading three RBI, all coming on the final play, while Turner scored two of the team's eight runs. Turner extended his hitting streak to 22 games and has scored a run in 19 consecutive contests.
The Wolverines will return to action on Saturday (April 25), continuing their series against Washington at Ray Fisher Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
