ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan athletic director Bill Martin announced Rich Maloney has signed a five-year contract to continue as head coach of the U-M baseball team Wednesday evening (June 20). Terms will be announced at a later date.
"We're very happy to keep Rich in the Michigan family," said Martin. "He's done a tremendous job bringing the program back and we look forward to having this program continue to grow under his guidance in the next five years."
Maloney just completed his fifth season at Michigan, leading the Wolverines to a 42-19 record, a second straight Big Ten Conference title and the NCAA Regional title at top-ranked and top-seeded Vanderbilt. The Wolverines made their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance this season and first ever Super Regional appearance. For the team's accomplishments, Maloney was named the 2007 Big Ten Coach of the Year.
"This is a very happy moment for my family and I, and the Michigan baseball family, that I'll be staying at Michigan for the next five years at least," Maloney said. "I'm just extremely excited to work with this great group of guys and staff, and be part of the new stadium and enjoy being able to watch the dream that I had of the new stadium come to fruition.
"It would have been sad not to be part of this group of guys I assembled and not finish out our quest to make it to Omaha," continued Maloney. "I'm absolutely thrilled, my family is thrilled. I'm a Michigan man, we're Michigan people. I love the University of Michigan and I'm elated that this could be worked out and now I can just coach the team."
Maloney has a 191-112 (.630) overall record at U-M, and is 96-55 (.636) in Big Ten action. In 12 years as a head coach, including seven at Ball State University, Maloney is 447-256-1 (.636) and has won four conference titles (1999 and 2001 MAC; 2006 and 2007 Big Ten), as well as the 2006 Big Ten Tournament title. He has recorded 40-win seasons in each of the last three years, including a career-best 43 in 2006. Maloney has had a pitcher chosen in the Major League Baseball Draft each of his 12 years as a head coach, and has had four first-team All-Big Ten picks the last two years.
