Vanderkaay Claims Silver at World University Games

BANGKOK, Thailand -- Senior Alex Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) of the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team swam to a silver medal in the 400-meter individual medley Monday (Aug. 13) at the 2007 World University Games, held at the Thammasat University Aquatic Center.
With his time of 4:17.34, Vanderkaay finished behind American teammate Patrick Mellors, who captured the gold in a Games-record time of 4:12.94. Swimming events at the World University Games continue through Tuesday (Aug. 14).
Vanderkaay was the 2007 NCAA champion in the 400-yard individual medley and earned three All-America honors as a junior last year in the 400 IM, 500-yard freestyle (6th) and 800-yard freestyle relay (5th). In three years with Michigan, Vanderkaay has earned a total of seven All-America citations and five Big Ten Conference titles.
An industrial and operations engineering major, Vanderkaay is one of three brothers to swim for Michigan, joining Peter (2002-06) and Christian (2001-05).
