ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team opened its preseason exhibition schedule with a 5-0 victory over Ohio Thursday afternoon (Aug. 23) at the U-M Soccer Field. The game was played in three 30-minute periods, and after a scoreless first frame, the Wolverines revved up the offense with three goals in the second period and a pair in the final stanza.
The U-M freshman class accounted for three goals and two assists, led by Amanda Bowery(Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester), who had one of each. Bowery opened the scoring 10 minutes into the second period. After taking a pass from junior Katie Miler(Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) on the right, Bowery ran past the defender on the outside and deposited the ball into the lower-left corner.
Senior Katie Bohard(Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) gave the Wolverines a 2-0 edge at the 56:40 mark, taking a low pass across the goal mouth from senior Sarah Banco(Medfield, Mass./Noble and Greenough School) and shooting it into the back of the net. Freshman Jackie Carron(Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) scored just over three minutes later to extend the lead to 3-0.
In the final stanza, freshman Stephanie Crawford(Novi, Mich./Novi) became the third newcomer to hit the back of the net, giving Michigan a 4-0 edge, and senior Melissa Dobbyn(Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) scored a goal of her own to cap the Michigan offense.
The Maize and Blue got a chance to see three of its four goalies in action, with junior Madison Gates(Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker), senior Lindsay Yakel (Shelby Township, Mich./Utica) and freshman Sarah Morgan(San Marino, Calif./San Marino) combining for the shutout.

Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On her team's first game of the season... "The first five minutes was a bit chaotic and I wasn't really sure what was going to happen, but then we just settled into our game. For us, five goals is very good. Anytime you can score five goals in a college game is a positive."
On the impact of the freshmen... "It's good. We needed to add some offensive punch and now we have different kinds of weapons. To not taper down, especially today when it was hot and we are just coming out of the preseason (practice), is encouraging."
