ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team closed its 2007 exhibition schedule with a 2-1 loss to Dayton Saturday afternoon (Aug. 25) on the U-M Soccer Field. After trailing for most of the three 30-minute period game, Michigan got new life on a Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) goal at 66:53 but it wasnt enough to fight off the relentless Flyers attack.
Junior Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) and senior Lindsay Yakel (Shelby Township, Mich./Utica) combined for seven saves, holding the Wolverines in the game through the waning minutes of the contest.
Dayton jumped out to a 1-0 lead before seven minutes had clicked off the clock. Facing a flurry of shots, Gates was able to stave off the first two shots from inside the box. However, after a sprawling save on the second Dayton attempt, Mandi Bck found the ball at her feet and pushed it into the back of the net.
Following an offense heavy first period that saw the teams combine for 14 shots -- five on goal -- the teams battled back-and-forth in the midfield during the middle frame. Neither team was able to generate scoring chances as both teams defense locked down their respective zones.
Michigan broke even in the third period at the 66:53 mark, when Dobbyn scored on a turnover to knot the game at 1-1. Dobbyn emerged from a crowd of Dayton players fighting to receive a pass 20 yards out and went in alone on the goalkeeper Lisa Rodgers. Dobbyn led Rodgers to the left before wrapping a shot around the diving goalie and into the lower-left corner.
The Wolverines had their chances to take the lead with less than three minutes remaining. Dobbyn was able to pick off another pass from the goalkeeper but was unable to gain control of the ball long enough to get a shot off. Moments later, freshman Stephanie Crawford (Novi, Mich./Novi) broke an offside trap with a good jump but could not get to the ball before the goalkeeper.
Dayton delivered the decisive blow at 88:01, as the Flyers took a 2-0 lead on a Jen Leslie goal. Leslie raced a Wolverine defender down the field, chasing after a free ball. Leslie took possession 35 yards from the goal and chipped a shot over the charging Yakel.
The Wolverines begin their 14th season of varsity competition next Friday (Aug. 31) against No. 2 Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., . The game is slated for a 7:30 p.m. EDT start and will air live on Comcast Local.
