ANN ARBOR Mich. -- Despite a heroic effort in the face of a one-man disadvantage, the No. 10 University of Michigan men's soccer team fell to No. 19 Indiana in overtime, 3-2, Saturday (Sept. 29) on the U-M Soccer Field.
Michigan and Indiana matched up well during the first half. Indiana was able to penetrate the 18-yard box with some efficiency, but the Hoosiers found only one score in the first half at the 25:28 mark. The goal came when the first shot from an Indiana player hit the post and came right back to Billy Weaver, who shot it in to give IU a 1-0 advantage.
Fifteen minutes later, at 40:14, junior forward Jake Stacy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) booted a free kick -- after an Indiana penalty -- that set up a score by freshman defender Jeffrey Quijano (Simi Valley, Calif./Canoga Park), tying the game at 1-1.
Indiana had a few more opportunities in the opening half, but Michigan's defenders prevented any more damage.
The second half began with a red card against Quijano (49:14) -- a major blow for the Wolverines, who played the rest of the match a man down. The penalty set up a Hoosier free kick, but junior/sophomore goalkeeper Patrick Sperry (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) made a diving stop to prevent a goal.
The Hoosiers did cash in on their advantage at the 53:48 mark. Neil Wilmarth booted a shot into the left corner of the goal to hand Indiana the lead, 2-1.
With time running out and Michigan behind, Stacy earned another assist when he knocked a corner kick into the goal area, and junior defender Michael Holody (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) headed it into the net to even up the contest, 2-2. During the 15 minutes that remained in the half, Indiana fired a barrage of shots against Michigan, but the Wolverines preserved the tie to head into overtime.
Michigan played with a tremendous amount of heart, but it was not enough to prevent the hot Hoosiers from scoring the golden goal in the first overtime at 95:47. Kevin Noschang headed a score past Sperry into the right side of the goal.
Michigan will face Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., Wednesday (Oct. 3) on Alumni Field. The match begins at 7 p.m. CDT.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On his disappointment ... "Typically, coaches feel how their teams feel and I'm feeling that pit in my stomach with the fact that the kids battled really hard and we played a man down for 50 minutes. Certainly there is some disappointment there."
On getting back up for the tough road stretch ahead ... "I think that a challenge for any team when you suffer a disappointment like this is how you bounce back. I think this team has the character to show some resiliency and get ready for Notre Dame which is a very tough game at their place."
On the heart the team showed ... "I think that it was about in the 53rd minute after Indiana scored that the heart took over. It's hard to see where the mind and body ends and the heart takes over, but certainly you saw a willingness from our team to get after them and not be defined by one call. I think they did a great job."
