SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team opened its 2007-08 campaign at the 21st annual Tom Fallon Invitational, held Friday through Sunday (Sept. 28-30) at Notre Dame's Courtney Tennis Center. Eight of U-M's 11 players were in action over the weekend, and the Wolverines won 23 of 31 matches in singles competition and went 11-5 in doubles playduring the three-day event, which featured players from five teams on the Maize and Blue's 2008 dual match schedule: Western Michigan (Jan. 26), Michigan State (March 12), Iowa (March 28), Purdue (April 5) and Notre Dame (April 12).
Spearheading a solid singles effort for Michigan was junior Peter Aarts(Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS), who posted four straight-set victories to complete an undefeated weekend.Junior Andrew Mazlin(Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) also left the tournament with an unblemished singles record, as he began the weekend with a pair of comeback super-tiebreaker wins before closing with a straight-set triumph.
Junior Mike DePietro(Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS), sophomores George Navas(Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) and Matt Parks(Troy, Mich./Troy HS) and freshman David Streeter(Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves HS) all tallied 3-1 singles records during the event, while junior Scott Bruckmann(Sarasota, Fla./Saint Stephen's Episcopal School) and freshman Chris Madden(Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) both split their four matches.
Leading the charge in doubles for the Maize and Blue was Bruckmann, who teamed with DePietro for a perfect 3-0 mark and paired with Aarts for another victory.
Freshman Jason Jung(Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) will begin play in the 128-player qualifying draw at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships Monday (Oct. 1), facing Virginia's Ted Angelinos in the opening round beginning at 10 a.m. CDT in Tulsa, Okla. Jung hopes to earn one of 16 spots into the 64-player main draw, which begins Thursday (Oct. 4). Senior Matko Maravic(Zagreb, Croatia/V.
