
U-M Loses Lead, Places Fourth at Wolverine Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's golf team could not hold onto its first-day lead at the Wolverine Invitational, as the Maize and Blue shot 323 in the final round today (Sunday, Sept. 30) and finished fourth with a 921 total. With the U-M Golf Course set up for championship conditions, the individual scoring average was up almost two strokes across the board Sunday.
The Wolverines opened the tournament with their first team total under 300, posting a tournament-best 295 in Saturday's first round. The Maize and Blue followed with a 303 in second round Saturday, giving the Wolverines a 598 36-hole total and a two-stroke lead over Notre Dame.
With scoring conditions tough Sunday, the Wolverines were unable to recover from early mistakes. Notre Dame closed with a 304 total to take the team title at 904 (303-297-304). The Fighting Irish held off the late charge of Wisconsin, which stormed up the leaderboard on the final day posting a 908 tournament total (310-297-301). Indiana was third at 916 (306-302-308).
For the Wolverines individually, sophomore Ashley Bauer(Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) had a season-best eighth-place finish with a season-best 227 total (72-74-81), leading the Wolverines for the third straight tournament with her third straight top-20 finish. Bauer shared the individual lead after her season-best 72 in the first round, and she followed with rounds of 74 and 81.
Junior co-captain Lydia Bentez Coln(Dorado, P.R./Pendleton School) posted her first career top-10 finish as she tied for ninth with a career-best 228 tournament total. She opened with a 74 in the first round, made five birdies en route to a 73 in the second round, and closed with an 81.
Other finishes for Wolverine starters included: senior co-captain Lindsay Davis(Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS), tied for 21st with a season-best 233 total (75-79-79); freshman Min Yean Tan(Queensland, Australia/Hills International College), 31st with a 237 total (74-80-83); and sophomore Andrea Ratigan(Tucson, Ariz./Sabino HS), tied for 32nd with a 238 total (79-77-82).
U-M had three individuals competing at its only home event of the season. Freshman Louisa Shu(West Bloomfield, Mich./Birmingham Seaholm HS) and senior Isabelle Gendreau(St. Georges de Beauce, Quebec/Saint Andrew's School) both tied for 28th with 236 totals. Shu posted rounds of 78, 77 and 81, while Gendreau had tallies of 79, 80 and 77. Freshman Katelin Davis(Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) finished 57th with a 255 total (84-86-85).
Eastern Michigan's Stephany Fleet held onto her first-day lead and took home medalist honors with a six-over-par total of 219 (72-70-77). Indiana's Laura Nochta (75-71-75), SMU's Kate Ackerson (74-71-76) and Notre Dame's Lisa Maunu (74-72-75) all tied for the runner-up spot at 221.
The Wolverines will have two weeks to prepare for their next tournament, the Price's Give Um Five Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M. The 54-hole tournament will be played Monday through Wednesday, Oct. 15-17, at the New Mexico State Golf Course.
