ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team fell to Iowa, 68-60, Saturday night (Jan. 19) in Crisler Arena. With the help of junior Jevohn Shepherd(Toronto, Ontario, Canada/West Hill Collegiate), who collected a career-high 11 points, the Wolverines held a lead for the majority of the first half. Michigan's hot shooting never translated into the second half as a seven-minute drought doomed the Wolverines' chances of victory. A barrage of three-pointers late in the game trimmed a double-digit Iowa lead to as little as 63-60 with under a minute to play, but clutch free-throw shooting by the Hawkeyes cemented the Iowa win.
Sophomore DeShawn Sims(Detroit, Mich./Pershing HS) led the Wolverines with 18 points on 6-of-15 shooting, including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. Freshman Manny Harris(Detroit, Mich./Redford HS), who fouled out with 37 seconds left, added 11 points on five-of-seven shooting.
Michigan took control of the game at the onset with the hot hand of Shepherd, who netted an early seven points off a pair of inside buckets and a three-pointer. Shepherd closed the half with a game-high 11 points on five-of-seven shooting from the floor. U-M held a seven-point lead early in the contest and the teams exchanged baskets for the remainder of the half. Zach Gibson(Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) added six points with a pair of three-point baskets to provide a spark from the Wolverines' bench midway through the stanza. Iowa held a 29-27 advantage going into the break as Hawkeye forward Cyrus Tate netted two triples down the stretch.
Sims started the second half with a bucket to tie the score at 29-29. Michigan, however, was not able to keep the hot hand and soon suffered through a seven-minute drought as Iowa went on to build a 16-point advantage. Trailing 52-38 with just over five minutes to play, the Wolverines exploded from beyond the arc by netting six three-pointers to close out the contest. Of the six, freshman Kelvin Grady(Grand Rapids, Mich./East) accounted for a pair and Sims netted three, including a four-point opportunity after drilling a shot from the top of the arc and a free throw to pull the Wolverines within four points, 58-54, with 1:22 remaining. Even with momentum Michigan was never able to capture a lead as Iowa netted seven free throws down the stretch to seal the road victory.
The Wolverines head to Madison, Wis., Tuesday (Jan. 22) to take on the Wisconsin Badgers in the Kohl Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m CST on ESPN.
