DURHAM, N.C. -- The No. 21-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team fared extremely well on the first day of the Duke Invitational Friday (Jan. 19) at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center, claiming nine of 11 in singles and three of five in doubles over No. 10-ranked North Carolina.
The Wolverines won three singles matches in straight sets, led by freshman Jason Jung's(Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) 6-4, 6-4 victory over Stefan Hardy. Four U-M players came back to win after dropping the first set in their respective matches, including senior Matko Maravic's(Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 triumph over Clay Donato.
Jung and sophomore Mike Sroczynski(Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School), who are ranked 23rd nationally in doubles, opened the three-day round robin tournament by outlasting Tristan Heinrich and David Stone in a tiebreaker, 9-8(5).
The Duke Invitational is not scored as a team effort. However, each match counts toward the individual players' records and rankings.
The Wolverines resume play on Sunday (Jan. 20) against No. 16-ranked Duke beginning at 2 p.m.
