DURHAM, N.C. -- The No. 21-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team concluded the Duke Invitational with another strong performance Monday (Jan. 21) at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center, winning nine of 10 singles matches and earning a doubles sweep over No. 53-ranked Elon and No. 10-ranked North Carolina.

All nine of U-M's singles wins came in straight sets, led by senior Matko Maravic's(Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) 7-6(2), 7-6(5) triumph over Elon's No. 72-ranked Damon Gooch. Maravic finished the three-day round robin tournament with a 3-0 singles record and finished second in the point standings with 28.

Michigan's No. 55-ranked Jason Jung(Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) finished fourth with 19 points after closing out the event with a 7-5, 6-0 decision over Elon's Oscar Podlewski.

Juniors Peter Aarts(Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) and sophomore Matt Parks(Troy, Mich./Troy HS) both joined Maravic with an undefeated singles record of 3-0. Junior Scott Bruckmann(Sarasota, Fla./Saint Stephen's Episcopal School) finished at 2-0.

Junior Andrew Mazlin(Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS), sophomores George Navas(Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) and Mike Sroczynski(Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School), and freshmen Chris Madden(Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) and David Streeter(Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves HS) joined Jung with a 2-1 singles record.

Jung and Sroczynski defeated Elon's Podlewski and Mason Schermerhorn (8-4) to complete a perfect 3-0 doubles record. Aarts, Bruckmann, Parks and junior Mike DePietro(Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) also went undefeated in doubles during the tournament. Maravic, Mazlin, Navas and Madden were victorious in two of three outings.

Michigan finished the three-day tournament with combined records of 24-8 (.750) in singles and 12-2 (.857) in doubles.

The Duke Invitational was not scored as a team effort. However, each match counts toward the individual players' records and rankings.

The Wolverines open the 2008 dual-match season on Saturday (Jan. 26) with a doubleheader at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center in Muncie, Ind. Michigan will begin the day with a neutral-site match against Western Michigan at 10 a.m. and wrap things up against Ball State at 6 p.m.
