BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team saw its three-game winning streak halted by Indiana on Sunday (Oct. 12), falling 2-1 at the Hoosiers' IU Field Hockey Field. After taking the initial lead, the Wolverines allowed a pair of second-half goals en route to their first Big Ten Conference loss of the season and first since 2006.
The Hoosiers scored twice during the final 18 minutes of regulation play -- the second coming with just 8:04 remaining -- to steal away the advantage in the closing moments of the contest. Katie Griswold set up the gamewinner for Indiana, carrying the ball deep into the circle and to the left side of the U-M cage before dishing to the front of the goal where Alina Valenti banged it past Wolverine senior/junior goalkeeper Paige Pickett(Dallas, Texas/Episcopal School of Dallas).
Indiana had evened the score less than 10 minutes earlier off its first penalty-corner opportunity of the second frame. Meg O'Connell got her stick on the direct shot by IU striker Danitra Castro, redirecting the ball past Pickett at the 52:33 mark to put her team on the board.
The Wolverines gained the early edge at 8:55 as sophomore Meredith Way(Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) scored her 10th marker of the season on Michigan's first shot and penalty-corner opportunity of the contest. The U-M sophomore received the ball at the top of the circle and rocketed a low shot to the right side of the Hoosier cage, beating goalkeeper Alex Mann. Senior/junior Heather Wiley(San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) and senior captain Sarah Wilhite(Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey HS) earned assists for the stop and the push, respectively. The helper extended Wilhite's point streak to 12 straight games.
Indiana narrowly outshot the Wolverines nine to eight, while U-M registered an 8-5 edge in penalty corners. Pickett earned two saves in the Michigan cage, while the Hoosiers' Mann stopped one of Michigan's two shots on goal.
Michigan will return to action on Tuesday (Oct. 14) with a non-conference meeting against intrastate rival Central Michigan. The game is slated for a 3 p.m. start at Phyllis Ocker Field.
