EVANSTON, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team came up on the losing end of a 1-0 contest at Northwestern Sunday afternoon (Oct. 19) on Lakeside Field. Sophomore/freshman Kristen Keane(Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) was steady in net, making seven saves in her first collegiate start.
The two teams battled in gusty winds during the first half, with neither team able to get on the board through 45 minutes. Michigan dictated the pace of the play early, controlling the ball and taking three cracks at the net. Northwestern buckled down in the latter portion of the frame, and while the Wildcats were able to set up in U-M's third of the field on multiple occasions, they could not generate a serious threat.
With the strong winds now in its favor, Northwestern broke a 279-minute scoring drought in the series -- dating back to the 2005 season -- with a goal at 55:41 to go up 1-0. Jeanette Lorme fed a cross to an unmarked Jenny Dunn, who used a flying kick to drive the ball into the far side of the net.
Michigan generated a scoring chance in the 63rd minute and again a minute later. On the first chance, senior Danelle Underwood(Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) fed a pass on the right side to freshman Clare Stachel(Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central), who sent a low pass into the box that deflected off a Wildcat defender and narrowly missed skipping in. The latter opportunity had senior Katie Miler(Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) taking a pass on the wing from sophomore Amanda Bowery(Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) with nothing but daylight to the goal, but she was whistled for being a step offside.
Michigan has a light slate next weekend, taking on Indiana on Sunday (Oct. 26) in Bloomington, Ind. The 2 p.m. game is the lone contest of the weekend for U-M.

N O T E S
Kristen Keane became the third goalkeeper to start for the Wolverines this season, joining senior Madison Gates and freshman Haley Kopmeyer.
The Northwestern goal in the 56th minute was the first for either team in a head-to-head matchup since Oct. 7, 2005. Since the Wolverines won that game by a 3-2 tally, the teams had gone scoreless over a span of five regulation periods and four overtime frames.
Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Greg Ryan
On the game... "We played well. We had one great chance and they had one great chance. They put it in and we didn't. The kids played well. We created some chances and had more of the play in both halves. We only created one chance and Natalie (Horner) did a good job to create it, but (the Northwestern) goalie made a great save. They created one and put it away. Unfortunately we aren't creating enough chances and we aren't putting them away, because I think we are better than them and better than Wisconsin."
On Kristen Keane... "She played great today. She took care of all the balls that she had to. All of Northwestern's shots were long-range shots that were pretty much right at her or off target. She did a good job controlling the ball behind the defense, and her distribution was good. She was very calm, collected and composed behind the back four. Whenever I put her in the game she has done really well and been really steady. I felt that she has earned it, and I needed to see her in the game situation as a starter for next year. With Madison (Gates) being a senior, it is good to know we have two really good goalkeepers in Kristen (Keane) and (freshman Haley Kopmeyer).
