BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team lost 1-0 at Indiana on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 26) at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Senior goalkeeper Madison Gates(Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) made three stops for the Wolverines in the loss.
Indiana controlled the action in the first half, notching eight shots to Michigans two. Despite the offensive pressure, Gates kept the Hoosiers off the board, stopping all three IU shots on goal.
IU continued its offensive attack in the beginning of the second half and finally made it on the board on a goal by junior forward Kristen Arnold. Arnold shot the ball from the top of the 18-yard box past Gates into the upper left corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
Down by one, Michigan began to generate some offense over the final 20 minutes, outshooting the Hoosiers 7-1, including four shots on goal. Unfortunately, Indiana goalie Lindsay Campbell stopped all four shots to maintain the shutout.
Michigan finishes its season on Friday (Oct. 31) when it travels to East Lansing, Mich., to take on the Spartans of Michigan State. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the DeMartin Soccer Complex

Michigan Head Coach Greg Ryan
On the offensive struggles... "The second half we didn't come out sharp. We were trying to get our girls out on top and we couldn't do it. Down 1-0 we had to make some adjustments. We took a defender off and put an attacker on and we were able to pressure Indiana more. But again, we were unable to put away our chances. We were defending well, but if you don't put away goals then you are not going to win games and that has been the story of our season."
On where the team goes from here... "Unfortunately, this is the end of our season. We are eliminated from the Big Ten Tournament, but we will go and play Michigan State for pride. I can't fault the girls for their effort. They all gave it their all, but right now we don't have to ability to score goals consistently in Big Ten play and that is something that we are going to have to fix in the coming years with recruiting and individual improvement."
