COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Sophomore Jason Jung(Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) and junior Mike Sroczynski(Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team claimed the doubles title at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships today (Monday, Oct. 20) at Ohio State's Varsity Tennis Center. The top-seeded pair defeated No. 5 seed Austen Childs and Simon Childs from Louisville, 8-4, for Michigan's first-ever regional championship.
Jung and Sroczynski, ranked No. 18 in the Intercollegiate Tennis preseason poll, came into the match winners of five of their last six matches and looking for their first tournament title. The duo, who reached the regional final for the second consecutive season, posted five straight wins to advance to the final before dispatching the Louisville pair.
Jung and Sroczynski played well from the outset of the match and found themselves up 5-2 on the 26th-ranked team from Louisville. Childs and Childs were able to take a few games late, but the Wolverines held serve to take their first regional title. With the win, the pair automatically qualified for the prestigious ITA National Indoor Tournament, to be held Nov. 6-9 in Charlottesville, Va.
Michigan will take some time off from competition as it prepares for the Big Ten Singles Championship, scheduled for Oct. 31-Nov. 3 in Madison, Wis.
Following are Jung and Sroczynski's results:
Jason Jung/Mike Sroczynski
First Round -- d. Ferguson/Gruter (Indiana), 8-2
Second Round -- d. Warren/Herron (Butler), 8-3
Third Round -- d. Helgeson/Havens (Notre Dame), 8-6
Quarterfinals -- d. Novak/O'Connell (Ohio State), 8-5
Semifinals -- d. Konague/Allare (Ohio State), 9-8(2)

Michigan Head Coach Bruce Berque
On today's match... "Mike and Jason again played great doubles and came away with an impressive win. After watching last night, I thought they played outstanding and wasn't sure that they could top that performance, but they played very well today. The two of them played at a high level with lots of energy and intensity today, and really it's the best I have ever seen them serve. They never lost more than one point in any game on their serve today, and when they're serving that well, they are tough."
On their progress this fall... "Mike and Jason have showed great progress this fall and have really turned into a great doubles team. It's very encouraging to see them playing with such consistency and at such a high level."
On the opportunities at the ITA National Indoor Tournament... "They will have a great opportunity at the ITA National Indoors. The tournament has the best doubles teams in the country and I think that they can perform well there."
