SOMERS, Wis. -- Sophomore Tyler Clary (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) of the fifth-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team was named College Swimming's Counsilman Hunsaker National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week and Big Ten Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday (Oct. 21) following his three-win performance in Michigan's 182-115 season-opening dual-meet victory over No. 4 Florida last Friday (Oct. 17).
Clary won each of the three individual events he swam against the Gators, meeting NCAA consideration times in two of those events -- the 200-yard backstroke (1:44.21) and the 400 individual medley (3:51.66). He was also victorious in the 200 freestyle (1:38.53) and swam the final leg of U-M's second-place 400 medley relay team (3:17.61).
This is the first career national honor for Clary and the second Big Ten honor of his U-M career. He was previously named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 20, 2007.
Last season, Clary earned NCAA All-America honors on U-M's eighth-place 800-yard freestyle relay and was a two-time Big Ten champion (800 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay). He was also named to the 2008 All-Big Ten first team.
Clary and the Wolverines will next be in action on Friday, Oct. 31, in the first day of a two-day, double-dual meet against No. 1 Texas and No. 14 Indiana. The meet begins at 6 p.m. at Canham Natatorium.
