EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 stalemate at Michigan State on Friday afternoon (Oct. 31) at DeMartin Stadium. The Wolverines scored first, but could not make it stand up in the final game of the 2008 campaign.
Senior goalkeeper Madison Gates(Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) stopped six shots in the contest and posted the 21st and 22nd scoreless overtime frames of her career. Sophomore Amanda Bowery(Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season early in the second half.
After putting the screws to the MSU defense for almost 49 minutes, Michigan punched through at 41:10 to go up 1-0 off the foot of Bowery. The Wolverines leading scorer took a pass from freshman Kristen Goncalves(Ann Arbor, Mich./Gabriel Richard Catholic) outside of the box and with a delay, cut to the center of the field and unleashed a blast past the diving keeper inside the right post.
The Spartans got a golden opportunity with 22 minutes remaining when a Wolverine defender's cleat got caught in the turf. With what seemed like nothing but daylight to go, the attacker stormed toward the net, but senior Skylar Andrews(Dallas, Texas/Plano West Senior) slid over to force a hasty shot that sailed harmlessly over the cage. Two minutes later, the Spartans leveled the score at 1-1 on a one-timer to the right side at 69:55.
Both teams had chances in the first overtime, with MSU controlling the first half of the frame before Michigan took its cracks at the net. U-M's best chance came on a free kick from 30 yards out when sophomore Jackie Carron(Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) lined a shot left of the wall into Bowery, who flicked a header into the arms of the goalie.
Michigan was knocking on the door as soon as the second overtime began. Freshman Clare Stachel(Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) sent a lead pass into Bowery, who split the defense but was beat by the goalkeeper to the free ball. Stachel was again involved late, storming down the right side with 1:20 left and cutting around the defender as she tried to angle a shot across the six-yard box but was stymied by a diving stop by the MSU keeper. The ensuing corner was punched away and after an exchange of possession, the MSU counterattack found a player wide open in close, but she was turned aside by Gates, who was hugging the post.
The Wolverines began the day by picking away at the Spartans early, generating a string of chances beginning in the 13th minute of the contest. Bowery and Underwood pressed two MSU defenders at top of the box as they attempted to clear the ball out. Underwood put her shoulder into one of these strikes, knocking it to Bowery, who took it past the defenders and let a low shot go that was turned aside by the goalkeeper. Following the chance, Michigan sustained the pressure on the Michigan State backfield. U-M spent much of the next five minutes in the attacking third by forcing several turnovers.
The Wolverines finish their 2008 season with a 4-10-5 overall mark and a 1-6-2 record in Big Ten play. The tie marks the end of collegiate careers for seniors Andrews, Gates, Katie Miler(Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne), Kristin Thomas(Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) and Danelle Underwood(Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern).

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Greg Ryan
On the senior class... "I am so proud of the senior class. They really changed us because they were very close and very together this year and backed each other throughout the year -- even in the hard times. When you lose 10 games and you stick together, you are going to stick together (all of the time)."
On if the team met its goals for the season... "Absolutely. We told the girls that we werent concerned with wins and losses this year. The only important thing was changing the culture this year and improving as players throughout the course of the season. I think we did that, but there is still a lot to do."
U-M Senior Goalkeeper Madison Gates
On finishing her career... "It was an amazing four years and I am definitely going to miss it. But (the seniors) will be around for the rest of the year and spending time with these girls. Hopefully I can help out next year and help out Greg (Ryan). It has been a great experience."
U-M Sophomore Forward Amanda Bowery
On her goal... "The coaches have been telling us all year to take the shot, put it into your own hands and take control. So I decided (to do it). I was going to take a shot at first, through a couple of defenders, but I cut to the side and let it rip and it found the back of the net."
