WEST LAFAEYETTE, Ind. -- Senior Madison Gates(Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) recorded nine saves to backstop the University of Michigan women's soccer team to a 1-1 tie at Purdue on Friday (Oct. 3) at the Varsity Soccer Complex. Sophomore Jackie Carron(Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) scored her first career goal late in the game to help propel the match into extra time.
Both defenses stood firm throughout the first 45 minutes, keeping the score 0-0 at halftime. Purdue managed to outshoot U-M 10-5, but the Boilermakers put just two of those shots on goal.
In the second half, Purdue broke through on a goal by Loredana Riverso in the 51st minute. The Boilermakers continued to put on the offensive pressure, notching 14 shots in the second frame, but Gates refused to allow another ball past as she recorded four saves over the final 39 minutes of the second half to keep Michigan in it.
With time running out, Carron found the equalizer in the 85th minute as she connected on a long shot from 20 yards out, sending the game into overtime where Purdue earned the only scoring chances. Gates again stood tall, recording her final two saves of the night to maintain the tie despite Purdue outshooting the Wolverines by a 28-12 margin.
Michigan will return to the field to take on No. 21 Illinois on Sunday (Oct. 5) at 1 p.m. CST as the Wolverines face the Illini at the Illinois Soccer and Track Stadium in Champagne, Ill.

Michigan Head Coach Greg Ryan
On the game... "The first half we were very flat and we didn't play well and in the second half we gave up a goal early in the half. But we were able to fight back and get some chances and getting that goal was great for the girls because they fought back and overcame a very poor start in the first half."
On Madison Gates' strong game... "Madison had a very good game. Most of the shots were from well outside the box and she handled those well. One she took off the bar and it came back to her and she caught it. Overall, she played a very smart game and she did a good job clearing the crosses and the loose balls so even beyond stopping shots I thought she played a really good complete game."
On the continued improvement of the team... "I'm glad to say the girls weren't content with a tie. They really felt they had a chance to win it. For me, we are making progress and getting better each game. To come back against a team like Purdue shows that they are getting better and they showed a lot of character and I am proud of the way they bounced back today."
