ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team completed day one of its double-dual meet against No. 1 Texas and No. 14 Indiana on Friday evening (Oct. 31), leading the Hoosiers, 143-60, and trailing the Longhorns, 108.5-94.5, in Canham Natatorium. Junior Andr Schultz(Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Palmares) had a strong first day for the Wolverines, posting two NCAA consideration times.
Schultz met a consideration time in winning the 200-yard freestyle. After a 22.99 first 50 gave him the lead, Schultz swam three sub-25 second splits to win in a time of 1:36.66, 0.81 seconds better than second-place Dave Walters of Texas.
Schultz and junior Adam DeJong(Holland, Mich./Holland) each met NCAA consideration times in the 500-yard freestyle. Schultz swam a second-place time of 3:29.27, nearly catching Texas Olympian Michael Klueh in the final 100. Schultz trailed by 1.31 seconds after 400 but closed with 25.11 and 24.91 splits to finish just 0.56 behind Klueh. DeJong swam the third-fastest time of the night, 4:21.72, just nine one-hundredths off his personal best.
The Wolverine 200-yard freestyle relay team of junior Chris Brady(Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant), senior Bobby Savulich(Edison, N.J./Saint Joseph), junior Charlie Houchin(Raleigh, N.C./William G. Enloe) and senior Jamie Martone(Troy, Mich./Troy) began the evening with a victory in an NCAA consideration time of 1:20.28. Houchin's third leg of 19.77 was the fastest split of the relay and gave the Maize and Blue a sixth-tenths of a second lead going into the final 50.
In the 200-yard individual medley, sophomore Tyler Clary(Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) and Texas' Ricky Berens, a 2008 Olympian, each touched the wall in an NCAA consideration time of 1:46.85. Clary led by 0.32 seconds at the midway point before Berens bridged the gap as the pair settled for an even race.
Clary put on a dominating performance in the 400-yard individual medley. Clary led by 1.92 seconds after the first leg and continued to build in the second leg, leading by 5.19 seconds at the halfway point. Bryan Collins of Texas cut the gap in the back half, but Clary's winning time of 3:53.11 still earned him the victory by 1.94 seconds.
Michigan once again showed its prowess in the sprints, going 1-2 in the 50-yard freestyle for the second straight meet. Brady and Savulich took the top two spots for the Wolverines, each posting NCAA consideration times. Brady won the splash and dash with a time of 19.82 and Savulich touched the wall closely behind in 20.01.
In the evening's final event, the 200-yard medley relay, U-M's team of Clary, sophomore Neal Kennedy(Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska), senior Curtis Dauw(St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) and Savulich were edged by just 0.11 seconds by the Longhorns. Trailing by 0.73 seconds heading into the final 50, Savulich swam a 19.46 freestyle leg to nearly earn the come-from-behind victory.
In the diving well, senior Kyle Schroeder(Milan, Mich./Milan) was the highest-placing Wolverine, finishing fourth in both the three- and one-meter with scores of 352.25 and 315.70, respectively.
