COLUMBUS, Ohio. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team rounded out the regular season slate with a 167-131 victory over Ohio State Friday (Feb. 1) at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. With the victory, the Wolverines finished the Big Ten dual-meet season undefeated for the 14th time under head coach Jim Richardson.
Senior Justine Mueller(Monroe, Mich./Monroe) turned in two consideration times as part of a three win evening. Juniors Emily Brunemann(Crescent Springs, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) and Hannah Smith(Dexter, Mich./Dexter) and sophomore Margaret Kelly(Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) were all multiple race winners, with the junior duo clicking off one NCAA 'B' time apiece.
Mueller put the capstone on the 2007-08 regular season, turning in a consideration time of 2:03.46 in the 200-yard individual medley to round out the night's solo events. Mueller's other NCAA 'B' time came four races earlier when she beat the pack to the wall in the 200-yard breaststroke on a time of 2:17.86. The Wolverine senior also edged out the Buckeyes for a win in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Fifth-year senior Melissa Jaeger(Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) also got in a consideration time, touching the in 2:01.74 for second place in the 200-yard butterfly. Jaeger finished just .68 seconds off of Ohio State's Samantha Cheverton -- the only non-Wolverine to win a swimming event. Jaeger also anchored the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay -- both finished with the fastest times on the night
Smith earned her consideration time with a convincing win in the 200-yard backstroke. Her time of 2:00.75 put her just under two-and-a-half seconds ahead of her nearest pursuer. The Wolverine junior was also fastest to the line in the 100-yard backstroke and led off both of Michigan's top relay teams.
Brunemann continued her season-long dominance in the distance events, coming in with just under a 20 second lead in the 1,000-yard freestyle before posting a consideration time of 4:50.75 in the 500-yard freestyle. Sophomore Catherine Nosal(St. Charles, Ill./North) posted a personal best 10:21.11 in the 1,000-yard race, finishing in fourth place.
Kelly championed the Wolverines in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events, missing her season best by seven-hundredths of a second in the longer of the two races. Senior Elyse Lee(Albion, Mich./Albion) got a victory off of the one-meter board and junior Payton Johnson(Champaign, Ill./Centennial) earned a win in the 50-yard freestyle with a .12-second margin of victory.
Michigan will begin final preparations for the postseason during the next three weeks before it heads back to Columbus, Ohio, for the 2008 Big Ten Championships held Feb. 20-23 at Ohio State's McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
