Catrambone Takes High Bar Title at Pacific Coast Classic

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Junior Joe Catrambone(Deptford, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) won the high bar title as the No. 6 University of Michigan men's gymnastics team placed fourth at the six-team Pacific Coast Classic Saturday (Feb. 23) at the Oakland Convention Center.
Catrambone, ranked No. 13 in the nation in the high bar entering the meet, placed first in the event (15.350) to lead Michigan (348.950) past Illinois (346.700), the only other Big Ten team at the meet. Top-ranked Stanford won the team title with a 361.650 total, followed by No. 3 Oklahoma (359.800) and fourth-ranked California (354.400).
Sophomore David Chan(Singapore/Hale School) was the only Wolverine to earn top-five finishes in two events, placing second on the pommel horse (14.800) and fifth on the parallel bars with a season-best score of 14.800.
As a team, the Wolverines performed best in the floor exercise and the vault, placing third in both events. Freshman Ben Baldus-Strauss(Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) led the Wolverines with a 15.400 on the vault. Junior Kent Caldwell(Charlotte, N.C./Latin) earned the Maize and Blue's best floor score with an overall fifth-place rating of 15.150.
Several Wolverines who did not compete in the night session took part in the Pacific Coast Classic All-Stars Competition earlier Saturday. Senior/junior co-captain Paul Woodward(Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) posted the top pommel horse score in the competition, matching his season best with a 14.450. Junior Jamie Thompson(Lakemont, Ga./Oconee County) took second place on the high bar with a season-high score of 14.200.
The Wolverines return home to compete against Pacific Coast Classic champion Stanford next Sunday (March 2) in Cliff Keen Arena. Competition will begin at 1 p.m.
