
Wolverines Win Titles in Each Event at Silverston Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Casey Taylor(Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) and junior co-captain Tiffany Ofili(Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti) posted NCAA qualifying performances and won two events apiece as the University of Michigan women's track and field team claimed titles in each event at its Harold Silverston Invitational Saturday (Feb. 23) at the U-M Indoor Track Building.
Taylor took first place in the triple jump with a distance of 41-10, an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. She also came in first place in the long jump (19-11).
Ofili placed first in the 60-meter hurdles with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 8.14, 0.10 off her season best of 8.04 that is tied for the best collegiate time this season. She also won the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.55, finishing ahead of runner-up sophomore Charnee Lumbus(Cleveland, Ohio/Collinwood), who ran a personal-record 7.82.
Junior co-captain Bettie Wade(Northville, Mich./Farmington) came in first in the high jump (5-6 1/2) and placed third in the long jump (18-11 1/4), while senior/junior Jennifer Mehl(Novi, Mich./Novi) tied her career best in the pole vault with a clearance of 12-0 to take first place.
Senior/junior Alyson Kohlmeier(Sarnia, Ontario/St. Patrick's) just missed adding a third NCAA provisional qualifying time to her 2008 resume with her first-place 4:49.02 in the mile run. Junior Geena Gall(Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) was impressive in the 600-meter run, leading the pack the entire way to finish with a first-place time of 1:29.43, while freshman Danielle Tauro(Manahawken, N.J./Southern Regional) won the 800-meter run by more than 11 seconds, clocking 2:11.35.
The Wolverines swept the throwing events, with fifth-year senior Bridgette Maynard(Clawson, Mich./Bishop Foley) winning the weight throw with a distance of 54-8 1/4 and freshman Allison Liske(Zeeland, Mich./East) grabbing first in the shot put (48-4 1/2).
Junior/sophomore Shana Vinson(Detroit, Mich./Mumford) earned a first-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a new personal best (24.94), and freshman Jennifer Neville(Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child) was the first to cross the finish line in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.78.
The Wolverines will compete at the Big Ten Indoor Championship next Saturday and Sunday (March 1-2) at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse in Minneapolis.
