
Michigan Cruises Past Wolfpack

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team posted a resounding 6-1 victory over No. 26-ranked North Carolina State Friday evening (Feb. 8)at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (4-1) surrendered just10 games in three doubles matches to claim the first team point, and U-M came out on top in the first five singles matches completed to clinch the team win.
Michigan's No. 23-ranked tandem of sophomore Mike Sroczynski(Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) and freshman Jason Jung(Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) proved to be no match for James McGee and Christian Welte at No. 2, as the U-M pair cruised to an 8-1 triumph to give the Wolverines the early momentum in doubles. Sroczynski and Jung have won 11 of 13 matches overall in 2007-08.
The Maize and Blue secured the doubles point 10 minutes after the completion of the No. 2 match, with junior Andrew Mazlin(Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) and freshman Chris Madden(Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) locking up an 8-3 win over Rob Lowe and Derek Stephens at No. 3. The Michigan duo remains undefeated in four dual matches and has been victorious in eight of 10 matches dating back to the fall.
Senior Matko Maravic(Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) and sophomore George Navas(Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) also kept their perfect dual-match doubles record intact at 5-0, as their 8-6 upset victory over North CarolinaState's No. 16-ranked team of Nick Cavaday and Jay Weinacker at No. 1 wrapped up a doubles sweep for Michigan. Maravic and Navas broke serve to go up 4-3 and then took care of their four remaining service games to seal their seventh straight win together.
Junior Peter Aarts(Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) supplied the Wolverines with their second team point, as he soundly defeated Lowe 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6 singles. The victory moved Aarts' overall season record to 15-4, with the 15 wins marking a new career high for a single season.
Sroczynski was broken just once in his 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Cavaday at No. 2, which put U-M in front 3-0. Sroczynski is undefeated in four dual matches and has been victorious in 11 of 14 outings overall.
Just seconds after Sroczynski's win, Mazlin closed the door on the Wolfpack with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Stephens at No. 4. Mazlin, who has won three of four in dual-match play this year, has clinched a team win on his court in two of the last three matches.
Maravic kept things rolling for the Wolverines, as he battled back to beat Weinacker 3-6, 6-4, 1-0(6) at No. 3 for U-M's fifth team point. Jung followed with a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory over McGee at No. 1 to put U-M ahead 6-0.
Welte prevented Michigan from earning the overall sweep, outlasting Navas 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 5 to close out the match.
The Wolverines return to the Varsity Tennis Center on Sunday (Feb. 10) for a noon match against Vanderbilt.
