Michigan Picks Up Pair of Wins in Minneapolis

Minneapolis, Minn. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan women's rowing team received a pair of wins from its first varsity eight against Louisville and No. 15 Minnesota on Saturday (April 19). The second varsity eight, first varsity four and first novice eight each recorded 1-1 records on the day.
The Wolverine first varsity eight won its morning bout against Louisville in exciting fashion, edging the Cardinals by 1.3 seconds -- 5:48.7 to 5:50.0.
The second varsity eight race between U-M and UL was equally as close, however, the Maize and Blue finished four seats back of the Cardinals, losing 5:55.9 to 5:56.9.
Michigan captured the first varsity four race with Louisville by a boat length in a time of 6:37.48. UL clocked in at 6:41.18.
In the afternoon, the U-M first varsity eight enjoyed a slightly more comfortable win against the host Golden Gophers. Michigan crossed in 5:42.54, while Minnesota was just over a length back in 5:47.94. U-M first eight finished the regular season with a 4-1 mark.
The Maize and Blue second varsity eight picked up its win for the day against Minnesota with a time of 5:53.4. Minnesota was a length back in 5:57.2.
U-M's first varsity four suffered a narrow defeat -- roughly five seats -- to the Golden Gophers, who won with a time of 6:25.81. The Wolverines finished in 6:27.21.
Michigan's first novice eight won by 28 seconds against Minnesota's third novice eight in the morning, but lost by 6.2 seconds later in the day when it opposed Minnesota's first novice eight.
Today's events concluded the 2008 regular season for the Wolverines. Next up is the Big Ten Championships on May 3. Michigan will host the event on its home course at Belleville Lake in Belleville, Mich.
