
Wade Wins Heptathlon at Cal Multi Event Meet

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Junior co-captain Bettie Wade(Northville, Mich./Farmington) of the University of Michigan women's track and field team came in first place in the heptathlon at the Cal Multi Event, held Wednesday and Thursday (April 2-3) at Cal's Edwards Stadium. In her first multi-event performance of the outdoor season, Wade posted an NCAA provisional qualifying mark with her score of 5,395 points.
Wade finished first in five of the seven events, including all four events Wednesday, when she won the 100-meter hurdles (14.15), high jump (5-7 3/4) and shot put (41-9 1/4) before setting a personal best of 24.77 to lead the 11-person field in the 200-meter dash.
On Thursday, Wade tied for second place in the long jump (18-4 1/4), placed fifth in the javelin throw (97-5) and closed out the meet with a victory in the 800-meter dash (2:25.95). Her final point total (5,395) fell 105 points shy of the NCAA automatic qualifying standard (5,500) but easily surpassed the provisional standard (5,050).
Michigan will compete at the Stanford Invitational Friday and Saturday (April 4-5) in Palo Alto, Calif.
