ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team picked up its 10th straight victory with a 7-0 decision over Purdue Sunday afternoon (April 6) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (12-4, 5-1 Big Ten) earned their sixth doubles sweep and won all six singles matches in straight sets to wrap up a shutout victory in their first outdoor home match of the season. U-M has posted eight 7-0 sweeps during its 10-match winning streak.
Competing together for the first time since Feb. 22, junior Lindsey Howard(Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin HS) and freshman Denise Muresan(Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson HS) crushed Alejandra Boeker and Whiney Reys by an 8-0 count at No. 3 doubles to get Michigan off to a fast start.
Senior Allie Shafner(Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) and freshman Whitney Taney(Edina, Minn./Edina HS) took charge midway through their No. 2 match against Joanna Craven and Cigdem Duru, claiming five straight games en route to an 8-5 victory that clinched the first team point for the Wolverines. It marked Shafner and Taney's second win in three days.
U-M's No. 56-ranked tandem of junior Chisako Sugiyama(Parsippany, N.J./The Montclair Kimberley Academy) and sophomore Tania Mahtani(Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) also completed an undefeated weekend with an 8-5 decision over Brooke Beier and Stephanie Wooten at No. 1. The Michigan pair broke Wooten's serve to go up 7-6 before Sugiyama served out the match and extended the duo's winning streak to a team-high eight matches. Sugiyama and Mahtani have won 12 of 16 matches at the top spot and remain undefeated in the Big Ten Conference at 6-0.
Howard got back on a winning track and tallied a 6-3, 6-1 win over Boeker at No. 6 singles to put the Wolverines in front 2-0, while freshman Rika Tatsuno(Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) closed out Ann Dzeva by a 6-2, 6-4 score at No. 5 to push her winning streak to 10 matches.
Mahtani, ranked No. 105 in the nation, provided the clincher with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Craven at No. 4. It was Mahtani's fifth victory in six tries at the fourth position. Muresan continued her impressive stretch with a commanding 6-0, 6-2 decision over Duru at No. 3. Muresan has won 11 straight and has not surrendered a set since Feb. 17.
Taney gave U-M a 6-0 advantage with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Wooten at No. 2. Eight of Taney's 10 victories at the second slot have come in straight sets. She has won nine straight matches dating back to Feb. 22. Sugiyama capped off Michigan's eighth singles sweep of the year with a 6-2, 7-5 triumph over Beier at No. 1. Sugiyama, ranked 46th nationally, secured her third straight 20-win campaign with the victory (20-10). She has won 11 straight and remains perfect in conference play at 6-0.
