Michigan Headed to Petite Final at NCAA Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan rowing team's No. 10-ranked first varsity eight was sixth in its semifinal at the NCAA Championships on Saturday (May 31). The Wolverines fell behind the top four boats (Brown, Washington, Michigan State, Virginia) in the opening 250 meters and were never able to recover. As a result, the Wolverines will race in the petite final on Sunday (June 1).
Washington was quickest off the line and had a full-length lead on sixth-place Michigan by the 500-meter mark. By the halfway point of the race, Brown had taken over the lead from Washington, while Virginia and Michigan State had asserted themselves as top competitors for a top-three finish as well. Southern Cal and Michigan were six seats and 12 seats back of MSU, respectively.
The Wolverines trailed by open water behind the leading four squads heading into the final quarter of the race. Brown, Washington and Michigan State finished first, second and third, respectively, with just 1.71 seconds separating first from third. UVA was 0.28 seconds behind to the Spartans to fall into the petite final. USC was fifth in 6:46.00, while U-M was sixth in 6:48.60.
The top three finishers from the two semifinals advance to the grand final on Sunday (June 1) at 11:30 a.m. PDT. The bottom three teams from the semifinals move on to the petite final, which will take place at 11:15 a.m.
