ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Former University of Michigan baseball pitcher Clayton Richard (2005) has been named to the U.S. Olympic baseball team as announced Wednesday (July 16) by USA Baseball Executive Director/CEO Paul Seiler.

Richard was selected by U.S. Olympic coach Davey Johnson to play for Team USA in the Beijing Olympic Games this August. The baseball competition runs Aug. 13-23.
Richard started his Wolverine athletic career as a quarterback on the Michigan football team but switched to baseball for U-M's 2005 season, and the southpaw was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 2005 Major League Entry draft in the eighth round.
Richard, the starting pitcher for Team USA in the Futures Game last Sunday (July 13) at Yankee Stadium, is currently a member of the Charlotte Knights of the International League, the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox.
Former Wolverines to play for the U.S. Olympic Team include shortstop Barry Larkin (1983-85) -- a member of the silver-medal winning team in Los Angeles in 1984 -- and LHP pitcher Jim Abbott (1986-88), who pitched the gold-medal winning game in Seoul, Korea in 1988.
