ANN ARBOR, Mich. C University of Michigan womens rowing head coach Mark Rothstein announced the addition of Kate Strum to his coaching staff on Friday (July 18). Strum arrives in Ann Arbor after three years as the top assistant coach at Bucknell University.
"Im very impressed with Kates knowledge of the sport, her thoughtfulness, and her eye for detail, said Rothstein. Kate will be my direct assistant with the varsity squad. I think she is a great fit for our rowing program here at Michigan, and I look forward to working with her."
Strum instructed the Bucknell second varsity eight during the 2008 season. During her other two seasons with Bucknell, she coached the novices and worked extensively with the coxswains. Before Bucknell, she coached at California-Davis for two years. Strum competed collegiately at Bates College (2000-03), where she was a rower and a coxswain.
As a result of Strums hiring, Rothstein also released a number of other new additions and changes to how the U-M coaching staff will operate. Third-year assistant coach Veronika Platzer will continue to direct the teams recruiting effort; however, she is going to shift her coaching focus from the varsity fours to the novice program.
Annie Hildebrand, who recently completed her athletic career for the Wolverines in 2008, will remain a part of the team as a graduate assistant coach for the next two years while she pursues a Masters degree in the Division of Kinesiology.
Furthermore, Heather Mandoli and Karen Smyte, both of whom have strong ties to Michigan, are going to be volunteer coaches for the Wolverines in 2008-09. Mandoli rowed for U-M from 2001-2004, earning the Big Ten Rower of the Year award and CRCA All-America first team honors as a senior. Her top rowing achievement came late last month when she was named to Canadas Olympic rosterthat will compete in the eight at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Mandoli also rowed in the Canadian eight at both the 2006 and 2007 FISA World Rowing Championships. Smyte oversaw the U-M novice program from 1999-2004 before taking a four-year hiatus from the coaching ranks.
Lastly, coach Rothstein welcomes back U-M alumna Christina Meyer, who will be the teams new director of operations while she trains for the U.S. National Team. Meyer, a 2002 graduate, had been a collegiateassistant coach for the past six years C four at Washington State and two at Harvard.
