
Michigan Caps Off Doubleheader with Win Over Ball State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team closed out its season-opening doubleheader with a 6-1 victory over Ball State on Saturday night (Jan. 24) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (2-0), who began the day with a 6-1 win over Western Michigan, swept the doubles competition and won five ofthe six singles matches to improve their all-time record against the Cardinals (1-2) to a perfect 13-0.
Senior Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) and junior George Navas (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) rebounded from their morning doubles loss to Western Michigan and earned their first career victory as a Wolverine tandem, claiming an 8-6 victory over Jose Perdomo and Jorge Rodriguez at No. 1.
Sophomore Chris Madden (Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) and sophomore/freshman Drew Daniel (Overland Park, Kan./Laurel Springs School) completed their second win of the day at No. 3 doubles with their 8-5 triumph over Shaun Bussert and Zane Smith, which clinched the first team point for Michigan.
Senior Peter Aarts (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) and sophomore Jason Jung (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) wrapped up the Maize and Blue's first doubles sweep of the season, outlasting Andres Monroy and Eduardo Pavia by a 9-7 score in their first career match as a U-M duo.
Aarts carried the momentum into singles play, cruising to an easy 6-0, 6-1 victory over Bussert at No. 3 to put the Wolverines on top 2-0. Madden added to the lead, handily defeating Monroy by a 6-3, 6-1 score at No. 4.
Ball State stayed in the match thanks to a win at No. 6, but Navas sealed the outcome just seconds later with his 6-3, 6-3 win over Rodriguez at No. 5. Michigan ended the evening on a high note, with junior Mike Sroczynski (Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) fighting back to claim a 2-6, 7-6(4), 1-0(6) victory over Perdomo at No. 2.
The Wolverines will participate in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Chapel Hill, N.C., where they will face California on Saturday (Jan. 31) at 10 a.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. U-M will then meet either North Carolina or Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday (Feb. 1) at either 10 a.m. or 2 p.m.
