ANN ABROR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team capitalized on a penalty kick in the 47th minute and hung on to tie Minnesota, 1-1, on Friday night (Oct. 23) at a rain soaked U-M Soccer Complex. Senior Alex Jendrusch (Troy, Mich./Athens) scored from the penalty spot to gain a share of the team lead with three goals this season, sophomore/freshman Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich./Lahser) made six saves in the deadlock, including a breakaway save with U-M down 1-0 late in the first half.
After a slow start for the Maize and Blue, Jendrusch took the game into her hands, volunteering for a penalty kick in the 47th minute. Michigan got the chance after Minnesota was whistled for a hand ball in the box and the U-M captain took advantage, ripping the shot to the right side and denting the twine to knot the game at 1-1.
The Wolverines moved the ball much better following the goal but could not find the back of the net through the remainder of regulation. Both teams pushed the ball into the attacking third during the extra frames, but quality scoring chances were hard to come by as both teams buckled down defensively.
Michigan was snake bit early as the Golden Gophers converted on their first chance 22 seconds into the game. Minnesota's Tamara Strahota got a through pass that split the U-M defenders and gave a clear path to the net, leading to the goal. In the 34th minute, a U-M defender slipped on the wet turf allowing another Gopher breakaway, but Kopmeyer came off her line and laid out to steer a shot labeled for the right side wide of the goal.
Michigan concludes the home stand against Wisconsin on Sunday (Oct. 28) for a 2 p.m. matinee on the Competition Field of the U-M Soccer Complex.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Greg Ryan
On responding to the quick Minnesota goal ... "It was a question of whether we were going down or are we were going to stay in this one and fight and the girls decided we were going to fight."
U-M Senior Midfielder Alex Jendrusch
On the momentum shift after the penalty-kick goal ... "That was a big turning point for us. That really got our offense going. We have had some trouble scoring lately, so it was good to get one up on the board. It really opened us up for the rest of the game. We had offensive chances the rest of the second half and into overtime."
