PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Senior André Schultz (Sao Paolo, Brazil/Colegio Palmares) of the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team was selected Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday (Nov. 17). It is the second time in his career he has received the award and first this season.
Schultz led a dominating performance for the Wolverines last weekend at the Minnesota Grand Prix (Fri-Sun., Nov. 13-15). The senior hit NCAA consideration marks in four of his five individual events while picking up one individual victory and four runner-up finishes.
Schultz started off the meet for U-M with a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle, hitting the wall in 9:05.01 for one of Michigan's two individual victories on the weekend. He followed up that performance with a runner-up and 'B' time of 1:46.83 in the 200-yard individual medley. Schultz then took second-place honors in the 400-yard individual medley in 3:49.66 for his second consideration time of the Grand Prix.
His two other runner-up finishes came in the backstroke events, stopping the clock in 48.45 in the 100-yard race and finishing in 1:44.40 in the 200-yard event, both NCAA 'B' marks. Schultz was also part of the third-place 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:01.75) to wrap up action at the Grand Prix.
The Wolverines are back in action this weekend, sending 11 swimmers to the TYR Invitational at Northwestern University. The three-day invitational runs Friday through Sunday (Nov. 20-22) at the Norris Aquatics Center.
