Nov. 22, 2009
This was the first meeting between the Wolverines and Jayhawks. Michigan has taken on opponents from the Big 12 Conference in the last four seasons and has a 3-11 all-time record in those games.
There was a Saskatchewan, Canada, connection in today's game. Michigan center Krista Phillips, from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Kansas' Krysten Boogaard are both from Saskatchewan and spent time in the junior national program. There was also a Michigan connection as KU's Kelly Kohn is a native of Adrian, Mich.
The Wolverines had a little cheering section at today's game. Dayeesha Hollins' family made the drive from Cincinnati, Ohio, along with Carmen Reynolds' family, which came in from Hilliard, Ohio. Ashley Jones also had relatives in attendance.
Junior guard Veronica Hicks posted a career-high 20 points in today's game. Her previous high was 16 points, which she has set twice. The first time was on the road at nationally-ranked Duke last season. Hicks is the first Wolverine to score 20 points since Carmen Reynolds scored 20 points against Penn State last season.
For the fourth consecutive game this season, the Wolverines shot better than 40 percent from the field for the game. U-M shot a season-best 57.4 percent from the floor against Southern Miss in its last outing.
Freshman guard Jenny Ryan set a new career high in rebounds with eight. Her prior previous best was seven rebounds against Marquette (Nov. 16). She led the Wolverines in rebounding for the first time this season.
For the fourth consecutive game, the Wolverines had double-digit assists and were one shy of double-digit steals with nine. U-M was in double figures in both steals and assists in its last outing against Southern Miss (Nov. 19).
For the first time this season, the Wolverines had an opposing player score over 20 points. KU's Sade Morris had a game-high 26 points.
