Wolverines Win Three Events at Long Course Invitational

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- A day after winning its second consecutive title at the USA Swimming Short Course Nationals, the No. 7-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team won three events at the Long Course Invitational today (Sunday, Dec. 6) at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.
Junior Tyler Clary (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) won his only event of the morning, the 100-meter backstroke. Clary, who was the high-point scorer over the three-day course of the Short Course Nationals, finished in 56.85. Freshman Connor McCarroll (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) was third (58.59) and classmate Alexander Hoff (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) took fourth (58.96) as the other U-M swimmers coming in in less than a minute.
Senior captain Chris Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) won the 100-meter butterfly, touching the wall in 54.81, while freshman Sean Fletcher (Vienna, Va./James Madison) finished fourth (56.90).
U-M's final victory came from senior Charlie Houchin (Raleigh, N.C./William G. Enloe) in the 400-meter freestyle. Houchin was the only swimmer to break the four-minute mark, stopping the clock in 3:54.58. The Maize and Blue took the second and third spots as well, with freshman Ryan Feeley (Rye, N.Y./Rye) finishing runner-up (4:02.97) and sophomore Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn./Towson) taking third (4:04.31).
The Wolverines now take some time off for finals before taking their annual training trip to Florida. Michigan will not be in competition until the New Year, next competing at the Orange Bowl Classic on Jan. 2, 2010.

All events in today's competition were timed finals. There was no preliminary swimming.
This was the first event in meters for the Wolverines this season.
U-M had four NCAA consideration times, using the 50-meter course standards.
The Wolverines only competed in the morning session, swimming the 100-meter butterfly, 100-meter breaststroke, 100-meter freestyle, 100-meter backstroke, 400-meter individual medley and 400-meter freestyle.
