PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- After leading the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team to its second consecutive title at the AT&T USA Swimming Short Course Nationals (Thu-Sat., Dec. 3-5), junior Tyler Clary (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) was selected as the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday (Dec. 8). It is the first time this season and the fourth time in his career he has won the award.
Clary was the high scorer in the collegiate division of the Short Course Nationals, racking up three individual third-place finishes, hitting the wall third in the 200-yard backstroke (1:42.47), 200-yard butterfly (1:45.54) and 400-yard individual medley (3:48.30).
Clary swam in eight events over the course of the three-day event, six individual and two relays, achieving NCAA consideration marks in all eight. On the relay front, Clary helped the Wolverines to a third-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay (6:35.14) and a fifth-place showing in the 400-yard freestyle relay (2:58.16).
At the Long Course Invitational (Dec. 6), Clary won his only event of the day, the 100-meter backstroke. He clocked in at 56.85, leading four U-M swimmers in the top six spots.
Clary and the Wolverines will take some time off for finals before taking their annual training trip to Florida. Michigan will not be in competition until the New Year, next competing at the Orange Bowl Classic on Jan. 2, 2010.
