CHICAGO, Ill. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 decision to No. 16 Florida State on Sunday (Feb. 15) in the consolation round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship at the Midtown Tennis Club. The Wolverines (5-4) won three of the first five singles matches after losing the doubles point, but the Seminoles (7-4) pulled out a three-set victory in the decisive match at No. 1 to escape with the team win.
Florida State claimed the first team point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles and then went ahead 2-0 with a victory at No. 3 singles. Senior Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) stepped up and delivered a huge 6-2, 6-3 upset win over 29th-ranked Clint Bowles at No. 2 to cut the deficit to 2-1. It was Mazlin's fifth career victory over a nationally ranked opponent.
The Seminoles responded with a victory at No. 4 to come within one point of clinching the team win, but sophomore/freshman Drew Daniel (Overland Park, Kan./Laurel Springs School) kept Michigan in contention with commanding 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Chris Cloer at No. 5. Daniel holds a team-best 7-1 record in dual-match play this season.
Junior George Navas (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) evened the team score at 3-3 with a big 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 comeback win over Andrew Bailey at No. 6. Navas is undefeated in three dual matches this year.
In the deciding match at No. 1, Florida State's 30th-ranked Jean-Yves Aubone completed a 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-3 victory over sophomore Jason Jung (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) to give the Seminoles the win. Jung was down 4-3 in the third set and had three break-point opportunities, but Aubone went on to hold serve before breaking Jung's serve in the ensuing game to wrap up the victory.
The Wolverines return home to the Varsity Tennis Center to host Harvard on Friday (Feb. 20) at 6 p.m.
