
Carron Repeats as MVP at Annual Team Banquet

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team handed out its 2009 season awards and recognized the efforts of its five-member senior class on Saturday (Feb. 7) at the annual postseason banquet held in the Junge Family Champions Center. The afternoon lunch also celebrated the team's first season under head coach Greg Ryan.
The highest honor of the day went to sophomore defender Jackie Carron(Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester), who was voted as Most Valuable Player for the second straight season by her teammates. Carron, who earned Soccer Buzz All-Great Lakes Region third team honors, started all 19 games on the Wolverine backline. She becomes thefirst Wolverine since Kacy Beitel (1999-2000)to be voted as MVP inback-to-back seasons.
Freshman Kim Siebert(Troy, Mich./Avondale) took home the Most Improved Player distinction. Siebert played in 18 games, making 15 starts and becoming a mainstay in the lineup as the season progressed. She tallied one assist in her rookie season.
Senior captain Kristin Thomas(Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) was named the recipient of the Maize and Blue award, recognizing a player for her team-oriented attitude. Thomas, a three-time Academic All-Big Ten Conference selection, made 15 appearances as a senior. The midfielder was also U-M's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree.
The program introduced a new award for the final honor of the night, unveiling the Lloyd Carr award to be given to a player who represents the Michigan ideals. The inaugural honor was bestowed upon senior captain Katie Miler(Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne). Miler tallied two goals and one assist in her senior campaign, including a gamewinner against her hometown team, Ohio State.
The banquet also paid tribute to the careers of seniors Skylar Andrews(Dallas, Texas/Plano West Senior), Madison Gates(Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker), Miler, Thomas, andDanelle Underwood(Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern).
