
Hagelin Chosen for CCHA Scholar-Athlete Team

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. -- Sophomore forward Carl Hagelin(Sodertalje, Sweden) of the University of Michigan ice hockey team was announced as U-M's representative on the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Scholar-Athlete Team on Tuesday (March 10). Hagelin and the 11 other players from each respective CCHA team are eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, which will be given out March 19 at the CCHA Awards in Detroit.
Hagelin, who is enrolled in the School of Kinesiology, was tabbed U-M's top scholar-athlete by head coach Red Berenson and the team's faculty athletic representative. The criterion for the honor is having a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 through the fall term of the selection year. The CCHA Scholar-Athlete of the Year is selected by the 12 faculty representatives; voting is based on a system that awards five points for a first-place vote, three points for a second-place vote and one point for a third-place vote.
Hagelin has played in all 36 games for the Wolverines this season, acquiring an 11-15-26 line. His 26 points and 15 assists are single-season career highs, and Hagelin also set a career high in multi-point games with six to date. Overall, Hagelin has tallied 22 goals and 26 assists throughout 77 career games in his first two seasons at U- M. Hagelin earned a U-M Athletic Academic Achievement award in 2007-08 as a freshman.
The No. 3-ranked Wolverines begin the CCHA Tournament this weekend (March 13-15) when they host Western Michigan in a best-of-three quarterfinal-round series at Yost Ice Arena. U-M and WMU open the series Friday (March 13) at 7:35 p.m.
