EVANSTON, Ill. -- The No. 51-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team pulled out a big 4-3 victory over No. 58 Northwestern on Sunday afternoon (March 29) at the Combe Tennis Center. With the team score tied at 3-3, sophomore Jason Jung (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) stepped up and delivered a three-set win at No. 1 singles to give the Wolverines (7-12, 1-3 Big Ten) their first victory in nine matches. It marked U-M's fifth straight 4-3 match and its eight overall this season. The Maize and Blue has now won seven straight matches against the Wildcats (13-6, 1-3 Big Ten).
After getting off to a slow start against 89th-ranked Marc Dwyer, Jung found his groove and posted a 6-2 win in the second set to extend the match. Dwyer regained the momentum by claiming an early 4-1 lead in the third set, but Jung kept his composure and won five straight games to snap a 12-match losing skid and provide Michigan with the first match-clinching victory of his young career.
The Wolverines claimed the first team point with a pair of wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. Senior Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) and sophomore Chris Madden (Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) were victorious for the seventh time in eight tries as they handily defeated Joshua Graves and Tobias Reitz by an 8-2 score at No. 2. Senior Peter Aarts (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) and junior Mike Sroczynski (Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) completed a perfect weekend together with an 8-6 triumph over Andrew McCarthy and Alexander Thams at No. 3 to give U-M a 1-0 lead.
Northwestern won three straight singles matches to take a 3-1 advantage, but Mazlin battled back to earn a huge 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over 119th-ranked Reitz at No. 2 to keep Michigan in contention. It was then Madden's turn to shine as he closed out Graves by a score of 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4 to tie the team score at 3-3 and set the stage for Jung's heroics at the top spot.
The Wolverines return home to the Varsity Tennis Center to host Penn State on Saturday (April 4) and Ohio State on Sunday (April 5), with both matches scheduled for a noon start.
