MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Five Wolverines on the national runner-up University of Michigan men's gymnastics team earned All-America recognition on Saturday (April 18) at the NCAA Championships Individual Event Finals, held at the University of Minnesota's Sports Pavilion. Five All-Americans ties for the most in the program's history, and the last time Michigan had that amount was eight seasons ago (2001).
Two gymnasts captured multiple recognitions -- sophomore Chris Cameron(Winter Haven, Fla./Lake Region) captured the status on floor and pommel horse, and Big Ten Gymnast of the Year, sophomore Thomas Kelley(Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville), earned the honor on parallel bars and high bar. Until tonight, a Michigan gymnast had not collected more than a single recognition since 2002 -- six seasons ago.
Other honorees include rookie Adam Hamers(Salem, Ore./South Salem) on pommel horse, senior co-captain Phil Goldberg(Dalton, Ga./McCallie) on still rings and senior Joe Catrambone(Deptford, N.J./Gloucester) on high bar.
The first half of the meet was comprised of a three-way rotation between floor, pommel horse and still rings. Cameron was the lone Wolverine on floor exercise -- the only event with just one Michigan gymnast -- but the Florida native came up strong with a score of 15.550 for a fourth-place finish. On pommel horse, Cameron and Hamers placed sixth (15.175) and seventh (14.525), respectively.
Goldberg equaled his season-best and team-high 15.400 on still rings -- a mark that he originally set yesterday -- to finish runner-up on the event.
In the competition's second half, the gymnasts rotated between vault, parallel bars and high bar. Kelley earned a 14.675 for a third-place finish on parallel bars and a 15.275 on high bar for the night's second-best score. Kelley and Goldberg's runner-up nods are Michigan's highest on any event in half a decade. Catrambone tabbed a 14.050 on the high bar to finish in the fifth spot.
