We Were Small But Mighty
WEDNESDAY | APRIL 8, 2009
Michigan women's gymnastics junior Maureen Moody (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) wraps up her blog for 2009 after a heartbreaking meet at the NCAA Regional Championships. For the first time in 17 seasons, Michigan missed out on advancing to the NCAA Championships after a third-place finish at regionals. Despite the disappointment for the team and its gymnasts, Mo takes a look at her teammates and their season and finds a lot of things to be proud of. Look out for a motivated Blue team in 2010!

This past weekend, we went down to the University of Arkansas to compete against five other teams in the hope of advancing to the national championships. Before the meet, we got together for one last talk to get us fired up for the competition. One point from the meeting that really sticks out in my mind is a comment that our trainer, Lisa, made. She said that of all the teams she has seen during her years working with gymnastics, this year's team is one of the most united she has seen. We support each other and care about the team as a whole, not just ourselves individually.
Our team fought hard during the meet, but we ended up finishing third with only the top two teams advancing to nationals. Even though the competition did not end as well as we had hoped, and our season came to a close, Lisa's comment is one of the reasons why I am really proud of the season we had. Throughout the whole year, we set little goals to accomplish, and each meet we improved together. I think that is a testament to our togetherness. We worked hard during the preseason to overcome injuries and slowly built our team up to conference champion material. From the outset of the year, we knew that it would be a challenge to get the whole team healthy and competition ready, but it was a task that everyone was up for, which shows the strength and character of our team. True to the motto we made up for the team this season, we were small but mighty.
Overall, it was a season to be proud of, learn from, and build off for next season. We will cheer on Becky, Sarah, and Kylee as they head to nationals as individual competitors, then put our nose to the grindstones in preparation for another season.
