COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan baseball team dropped both ends of Saturday's (May 2) twinbill at Ohio State, falling 6-0 in the opener as the Wolverines were no-hit for the first time in 27 seasons by OSU starter Alex Wimmers and then dropping game two, 9-6.
Junior first baseman Mike Dufek(Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) had a pair of hits and scored twice in game two, while junior second baseman Nick Urban(Whitehall, Mich./Whitehall) added his second homer of the season and junior rightfielder Alan Oaks(White Lake, Mich./Divine Child) posted a pair of runs batted in in nightcap.
In game one, Wimmers hurled the ninth no-hitter in team history and the first by an opponent against U-M since 1982. The game was a classic pitchers' duel between Wimmers and Michigan senior ace Chris Fetter(Carmel, Ind./Carmel) as the two combined for 14 strikeouts through five and a half innings of scoreless baseball.
In the sixth, the Buckeye bats finally got to Fetter, producing a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead, and they added three more the next inning off a combination of Fetter and reliever Matt Gerbe(Shelby Twp., Mich./Eisenhower) to go on top 5-0. Fetter left with two out in the seventh after fanning five and allowing four earned runs.
Meanwhile, Wimmers continued to cruise through the lineup, registering 14 strikeouts on the afternoon and getting great defensive play behind him to preserve the second-ever Ohio State no-hitter against the Wolverines.
In the nightcap the Wolverine bats woke up for a pair of hits and two runs in the first as Dufek delivered an RBI double and Urban added a run-scoring single to give the Wolverines the early cushion.
Sophomore Tyler Burgoon(Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) got the call on the mound in game two -- just the second starting assignment of his career -- and Ohio State wasted little time getting on the board with a single run in its half of the first and five more in the second to chase Burgoon and take a 6-2 lead into the third.
Ohio State added a run in the third off senior reliever Mike Wilson(Pickering, Ontario/Pine Ridge), increasing its lead to 7-2, before Urban launched his second homer of the season, a solo shot over the leftfield wall in the fourth inning, cutting the lead to 7-3.
Junior catcher Chris Berset(Vienna Va./Heights School) started a Wolverine rally in the sixth with a two-out RBI single and later scored on a two-run double to leftfield -- which was originally caught and then knocked loose when the OSU leftfielder Zach Hurley crashed into the outfield wall -- by junior rightfielder Alan Oaks(White Lake, Mich./Divine Child), cutting the lead to one, 7-6.
Meanwhile, sophomore reliever Kolby Wood(Eau Claire, Mich./Berrien Springs) held the Buckeye bats at bay with four solid innings of work, allowing just four hits before giving way to fellow sophomore Matt Miller(Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville), who retired the final batter in the seventh but allowed a sacrifice fly and RBI single by OSU's Ryan Dew -- who was 5-for-5 in the game -- as the Buckeyes posted a pair of insurance runs.
The Wolverines are back in action for the final game of their three-game set with the Buckeyes at 1 p.m. Sunday (May 3). The game will be carried live on the Big Ten Network with live stats and a live blog available for fans via MGoBlue.com.
