ANN ARBOR, Mich.-- Juniors Ashley Kroll(Edmonds, Wash./Kamiak) and Adrienne Mecham(Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens) and fifth-year senior Karen Colwell(Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington) of the University of Michigan rowing team were named to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association's All-America team on Monday (June 8). Kroll earned first team honors, while Mecham and Colwell were named to the second team. All three were members of U-M's first varsity eight boat this season.
Kroll is a two-year member of U-M's first varsity eight. Prior to being named an All-American, she earned All-Big Ten second team and All-Central Region first team status. Additionally, Kroll was picked as Michigan rowing's Athlete of the Year by the coaching staff.
Mecham has been entrenched in the Maize and Blue first varsity eight in each of her three seasons at U-M. Like her classmate Kroll, Mecham received All-Big Ten second team and All-Central Region first team accolades this season.
Colwell is U-M's first repeat All-America honoree since Leah Ketcheson in 2004 and 2005; Colwell received CRCA All-America first team distinction in 2008. Earlier this spring, Colwell was chosen for the All-Big Ten first team and All-Central Region first team. Her outstanding efforts in the classroom were also recognized as she was named a CRCA Scholar Athlete.
Selection for the All-America teams is based on the strength of finish of a team's varsity eight within the country, coach comments and 2,000-meter ergometer scores.
Michigan placed ninth as a team at this season's NCAA Championships. The first varsity eight was eighth, while the second varsity eight and varsity four both finished 10th.
