July 12-23 -- Three Michigan swimmers recently competed at the 18th Maccabiah Games over the past two weeks in Israel, with senior Alon Mandel and incoming freshman Andrew Novakoff earning first-place honors.
Mandel, swimming for Israel, took home first in the 100-meter butterfly, hitting the wall in 52.99 to match his Israeli record. Novakoff, swimming for the United States, was part of the winning 4x100-meter freestyle relay that stopped the clock in 3:21.17 to set a new Maccabiah Games record. In addition to his first place performance, Novakoff added a trio of runner-up finishes in the 200 and 400-meter freestyle and the 4x200-meter freestyle relay.
Senior Shaun Weinberg was the final Wolverine competing at the games for the United States, picking up a runner-up finish in the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:06.63. Weinberg placed third in the 400-meter individual medley, fourth in the 200-meter backstroke and fifth in the 100-meter backstroke. [Full Results]
The Maccabiah is the worlds largest and bestJewish athletic competition in the tradition and values of Maccabi, emphasizing the centrality of the State of Israel in the life of the Jewish people.
Monday-Thursday, July 20-23--Members of the Michigan swimming teamtraveled to Oxford, Ohio, to compete in the Speedo Champions Series Central Zone Sectional 3 meet, held at Miami University this past week. Senior Evan Ryser led the way for U-M, sweeping the 50- and 100-meter freestyle races and earning a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter freestyle. Senior Charlie Houchin and senior Adam DeJong went 1-2 in both the 200 and 400-meter freestyle events, with Houchin finishing runner-up to Ryser in the 100 free. Junior Neal Kennedy took first-place honors in the 100-meter butterfly while also taking third in the 50 freestyle.
U-M also was successful in the relays, winning two out of three events. The Wolverines won the 400-meter freestyle relay with the team of Ryser, Houchin, DeJong and Kennedy hitting the wall in 3:20.80. The quartet of Houchin, sophomore Sam Wensman, Kennedy and Ryser teamed up to win the 400-meter medley relay with a time of 3:46.38.[Full Results]
Thursday-Sunday, June 18-21, 2009 -- A number of current and former Wolverines had very strong performances competing at the Quebec Cup in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. In the 200-meter backstroke, Tyler Clary led a 1-2 Wolverine finish, winning in a time of 1:58.26, with Andr Schultz taking second in 2:03.57. Maize and Blue swimmers took the top four spots in the 400-meter freestyle as Matt Patton was first to the line in 3:49.75, followed by Charlie Houchinin second (3:51.17), Dan Madwed in third (3:53.37) and Adam DeJong who claimed fourth (3:55.13). Madwed also won the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:49.17. Meanwhile, Chris Brady swam a very strong 100-meter butterfly, taking second in 52.48 behind only Michael Phelps.
